Approval Criteria

tuning (structural modification) system

The system is designed to prevent traffic accidents and environmental pollution by inspecting the safety of a tuned vehicle.

Subject of Approval

  • As defined by Paragraph 1, Article 55 of the Enforcement Rules of the Automobile Management Act
  • Structure of the vehicle subject to approval means the length, width, height, and total weight (body weight plus maximum load and number of passenger, multiplied by 65kg)
  • Devices subject to approval shall include motor (power plant device) and power transmission gear, traveling mechanism (limited to axle), steering apparatus, brake, fuel system, electronics and electrical devices (limited to fuel system and devices powered with high voltage and current as per Article 2, Subparagraph 52 of the Rules on the Performance and Criteria of a Vehicle and its Components), body and chassis, connections and towing device, boarding system, loading system, emission and noise prevention system, lights (headlight, license plate light, taillight, brake light, sidelight, reverse light, etc.), pressure vessel and its accessories, and other device/system required for the safe operation of a vehicle and determined by the decree of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport

Criteria

The tuned component/system of the vehicle regardless of type (passenger, van, truck, special) shall comply with the criteria applied for its safety as per the Rules on the Performance and Criteria of a Vehicle and its Components (Safety Criteria) or any relevant law.

  • In any of the following cases, a vehicle that has completed tuning work shall not be approved as per Paragraph 2, Article 55 of the Enforcement Rules of the Automobile Management Act
    • Tuning of the structure/system resulting in the increase of total weight of the vehicle

※ Example: Installing an additional axle without reducing the length of the cargo box by the length corresponding to the weight of the axle

    • Tuning of boarding or loading system resulting in increase of maximum capacity or number of passengers
    • Tuning resulting in the repurposing of the vehicle (change of type)
    • The tuning that was done reduced performance or safety compared to prior to tuning
  • The following tuning work may be approved, notwithstanding the restrictions above
    • Tuning that restores the reduced maximum capacity or number of passengers
    • Tuning for increasing the maximum capacity or number of passengers without exceeding the limit for the vehicle of the same body or chassis that was self-certified and whose specifications have been notified
    • Tuning for increasing the maximum number of passengers through modification into a recreational vehicle as per Paragraph 2, Article 30 without exceeding the total weight of the vehicle
    • Tuning for modification into a passenger vehicle by removing the seat and related device of a van built with the same body and chassis as that of a passenger vehicle, including restoration of the original condition prior to tuning
    • Tuning a truck into a special vehicle or vice versa
